Research project University of Pennsylvania veterinary school online survey

Dear Officers and Board of the Newfound Club of America and Regional Club Representatives,

I am writing to ask for your help with Dr. Hess and my research project at the University of Pennsylvania veterinary school. We need many thousands of dog owners to complete our short 5 minute online survey (details included in the link) at:

Any and ALL dog owners can complete the survey, regardless of health status and whether the dog has diabetes.

We were wondering if you would be able to extend this survey to your members (via email to group lists) and/or post the link onto your website. Posting and sharing our link on social media is strongly encouraged to reach the general dog owner population (and Newfoundland Dogs across America!). We have been fortunate enough to receive support from the AKC and other breed clubs, whom are promoting the survey to their members and on their websites.

Every dog is valuable to this study and your assistance would be immensely appreciated by us (and dogs alike!). Please let me know if you can help. Thank you very much!

– Dr. Stephen Cai and Dr. Rebecka Hess

The New-Pen-Del Newfoundland Club, Inc. held its 40th Annual Water Test at Beltzville State Park in Lehighton, PA on Saturday, September 16th and Sunday, September 17th 2017. The event had three (3) entrants for the Water Rescue Dog Excellent (WRDX) test on Saturday and 27 entrants for the Water Dog (WD) Junior and Water Rescue Dog (WRD) Senior tests on Saturday and Sunday. Twenty-one of the entrants were New-Pen-Del members, while nine entrants hailed from states outside our region including MD, VA and TN. We also had an All-Breed Water Test on Saturday with two entrants. We were fortunate to have Lanelle Warrick from WA and Cherrie Brown from CA serve as judges for the event. Throughout the judging they were knowledgeable, upbeat, encouraging and fair to all participants and we thank them very much!

We were treated to a warm weekend with brilliant blue skies and low winds.  The beautiful waters of The Beltzville Damn were clear and calm with the exception of waves created by occasional passing boats. The temperatures were near perfect in the morning but quite warm in the afternoon soaring to 87 degrees on both Saturday and 82 degrees on Sunday. Our festivities began on Friday afternoon with an optional training session for the entrants to familiarize themselves with the site.

Early on Saturday morning three Newfs swam in hopes of obtaining their WRDX titles. While all gave valiant efforts, none successfully completed all of the exercises required to qualify. After the WRDX Division, six Juniors took to the beach and one dog earned a new Working Dog (WD) Title, “Gracie” handled by Jim Lonergan. The afternoon was filled with eight Senior Newfs who worked hard to earn or requalify for their WRD titles.  Several dogs came very close, but none of the dogs achieved their title. The day closed with two dogs competing in the All-Breed WRDX and WRD test.  Neither dog achieved a title.

On Sunday morning, five Newfs again tried for their WD titles. “Harry” completed all the Junior exercises and earned his WD Title. None of the other Juniors were successful. Of the eight Seniors who swam on Sunday afternoon, one successfully completed all of the exercises. “Grant” handled by Alice Harwell requalified as a WRD1.

Water tests would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of so many volunteers.  A big thank you to all of our stewards and to those who donated items for fundraising.  A special thank you to our test chairs who made the event a big success: Water Test Secretary Andi Ottey and her assistant Pat Matthews, Chief Steward Jim Lonergan, Hospitality Chair Megan Morgan, Fundraising Chair Kathy Wisniewski, Safety Officers Wayne Kimble and Ed Matthews, Grounds Gary Ottey, Equipment Chair Kathy Weber, Trophies Wendy Keyser, Judge’s Gifts Nancy Weaver, Water Test Logo Erin Lynn, Water Test Logo items Kat Lynn and our Photographer Jim Reed.
